Worth noting: Florida has set a program record for victories in a season … The Gators have not lost since losing at UConn, reeling off 30 straight victories … The only two teams to beat Florida this season, UConn and Wisconsin, are in the Final Four … This is the fourth time in UConn’s tournament history that it has played the No. 1-ranked team. The Huskies lost in the West Regional final to UCLA in 1995, lost to North Carolina in the 1998 East Regional final and beat Duke in the 1999 national title game … The Huskies are 6-1 in their four prior Final Four appearances with three national titles … The Huskies have reached the Final Four for the third time in the last six years … UConn has reached the Final Four for the first time from a region other than the West … UConn coach Kevin Ollie is one of just four coaches to reach the Final Four in his first NCAA Tournament appearance … Florida became just the third team to win its way to the Final Four with four double-digit victories. UConn did it en route to the national title in 2004 … UConn is 36-8 in its last dozen appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Prediction: From Editor’s Chair
Probable starters: UConn — Shabazz Napier, 6-1, G (18.1 ppg., 5.9 rpg.); Ryan Boatright, 6-0, G (12.0 ppg., 3.4 rpg.); DeAndre Daniels, 6-9, F (13.0 ppg., 5.9 rpg.), Niels Giffey, 6-7, F (8.3 ppg., 3.8 rpg.); Phil Nolan, 6-10, C (3.5 ppg., 2.4 rpg.).
Florida — Will Yeguete, 6-8, F (5.0 ppg., 5.2 rpg.); Casey Prather, 6-6, F (13.8 ppg., 4.9 rpg.); Patric Young, 6-9, C (10.8 ppg., 6.2 rpg.); Scottie Wilbekin, 6-2, G (13.4 ppg., 3.7 rpg.); Michael Frazier III, 6-4, G (12.6 ppg., 3.5 rpg.).
Why UConn will win: Defense, and maybe some of that magic. UConn’s defense has been vastly underrated, particularly in the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies forced Michigan State to play a way it didn’t want to play in the East Regional final Sunday. When the Huskies are able to dictate things on the defensive end, it makes things much easier for them on the offensive end. And the magic part can’t be underestimated. This run smells strongly of the 2011 run and the Huskies don’t feel in any way that they’re lucky to be here. They expected to be here. That sort of confidence has an impact.
Why Florida will win: Because it’s the best team in the country. You don’t win 30 straight games by accident, including beating fellow Final Four participant Kentucky three times. The Gators don’t overwhelm you with their offense but they might be the best defensive team out there. Their experience, with four seniors in the starting lineup, also matters a great deal. None of them has played in the Final Four, but they have all played in meaningful games in the last four years. The Gators are also completely healthy, which wasn’t the case when they played at Gampel Pavilion. Kasey Hill and Chris Walker give the Gators depth and didn’t play in the Dec. 2 meeting. Hill was hurt and Walker, a 6-10 freshman, was not yet eligible.
