UConn president Susan Herbst sent out a letter to all of the university’s students, staff and faculty inviting them to watch the men’s and women’s Final Four games together on campus. She said that Gampel Pavilion will be open at 5 p.m. on Saturday to all UConn students to watch the men’s game at 6 p.m. and the Student Union Theater will be open on Sunday at 8 p.m. to watch the women’s game beginning at 8:30 p.m.
She urged students and faculty to wear blue and white Friday-Sunday to show support for the basketball teams.
Lastly, the letter implored everyone to celebrate responsibly.
“This weekend, the eyes of the nation will again be on UConn – not only in Dallas and Nashville, but back home in Connecticut as well,” said the e-mail, which was signed by Herbst, men’s basketball coach Kevin Ollie and women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma. “Knowing that, we also write to ask that you conduct yourselves with the same sense of class, respect and winning spirit that our players have shown – and which UConn students as a whole show each day.
“We hope both games will end in celebrations on our campuses this weekend and beyond – but if you celebrate, please do so responsibly. Don’t let an amazing moment like a UConn victory be tarnished by doing something destructive.”
But on Thursday …
Probably playing off of the above, this flyer was circulating on the Storrs campus Thursday morning:
